In Nepal, education is one of the highest priority but it is an irony that the literacy rate is 34% even though in the allocation of every National Five Year Budget, education is given the highest priority. It is not the ignorance of the parents about the importance of education. It is the priority:
The food for the brain or the food for the stomach?
The monetary and material cost of education or the social and cultural cost?
Should children learn or labour?
Nicholas Bennett has rightly said,
" Crops cannot be grown on the blackboard
Nor certificates can be eaten."
Education is a hope for humankind since it provides them the knowledge and skills to confront the many challenges that the future hold in store. Education plays a fundamental role to play in personal and social development. It does not mean that education is a magic rod to cure or solve all the problems. It is one of the ways, which can help to reduce poverty, exclusion, ignorance, oppression, inequality, discrimination and war.
But it seems that we have forgotten the purpose for education that it is for the change of behaviour. It is a process and a mean to acquire wisdom to become a good human being and not only to memorise facts that cannot be applied and has no meaning to real life. Education will not liberate anyone within a night but if they get the right type of education, properly designed , it will help Nepali to make significant improvement in their quality of life. Definitely better life than now!
On the basis of all logical analyses, the present education system in Nepal should be redirected so that it liberates the peoples from ilusions nad waken everyone to become positive force and energy for self development and development of others. Nepal is urgently in need of education which will be able to generate energy for village development.
Providing working children, especially the girl children with access to basic education, through various alternatives could be seen as the most realistic interventions various communities can make on behalf of these children. The alternative programme which can be flexible in time, community based or work based , where the children earn in the process of learning which can enable them to support themselves as well as learn.
Bikalpa visualizes a normal, balance, just and peaceful society where every human being including the planets, the plants and all the living things can live together with dignity and peace.
Bikalpa visualizes a programme for the girls by realizing resource available wisdom and Knowledge that are there, the technology and skills which are existing in the community......... a programme which will enable them to be able to discover the potentialities they have within themselves and within their own community, strategies which they could implement, resources available within their own community and technologies and skills of which they are experts and for which they don't need to depend on others.
Bikalpa believes that development does not start from outside but from inside, it does not start form above but from below, it does not start with goods and materials but with people from the heart, the head and the hands. This was the time that the Nepali children who were working in different industries were facing terrible time since most of them were thrown out of the factory, to prove themselves clean having no child workers. This center was founded to protect the shattered children who have come down from the remote villages and were supporting families. The children were in problem because they do not want to go back to their homes empty handed. So Bikalpa program was initiated for the development of the girls who are in difficult circumstances.
