Random Survey on,
“Impact of Armed conflict on children in Kathmandul: Specially for Trauma”

Carried out in 2004
by Bikalpa HELP Recipients

In every armed conflict situation, the children are the worst victims. On going armed conflict in Nepal has affected the children directly and indirectly.  There are many children who are caught up in the armed conflict and have lost their near and dear ones.  They have witnessed violence and killing. They are severely traumatized but no attention has been given to these children.  The children in the city areas too are traumatized though they might not have faced or witnessed violence and killings or might not have lost anyone.  The heart breaking news cover by radio and television and newspapers are frightening for children. A random survey was therefore conducted on Impact of armed conflict on children in Kathmandu.  This is done with the objectives:

  1. To expose the emotional damage the present armed conflict has done to children,
  2. To draw the attention of the peoples specially working in the field of education that children’s trauma need to be dealt and healed.
  3. To explore the need to have survey in this regards and to carry on plan actions for these children through various educational interventions.

5000 questionnaires were printed and were sent out to various institutions and schools. The survey was done both written and oral to be inclusive. We received responses from 27 schools, (Private and Government School) and five institutions. Altogether we received responses from 3268 children.  Survey and tabulation have been carried out by the recipients of HELP program.

The finding of the survey has been that children are not normal.  Children are direct or indirectly traumatized.  There is urgent need to do something so that the children will have hope and scope for future. The educational institution like schools and orphanages must include trauma healing and conflict management in their program.
