Background:
When it comes to children, we visualise a secure environment where children get to study and live with security and peace. But it is a bitter fact that most children only hope of this. Because from carpet factories to local hotels, brick factories to children are being used rather compelled to work to make a living.
In this day to day whirlwind how can our children manage to attend schools? Schools in our context run about six hours a day. How then can we imagine children to participate ?
Keeping this difficult situation of children in mind, Bikalpa Gyan Tatha Bikas Kendra, began an Open Class for domestic workers. As obvious by its name, Open class is open to all i.e admissions are open all throughout the year. It is a literacy class run in three shifts everyday. Each class is run for two hours and within this two hours children learn to read and write and also play. The class is for two hours because children who are supporting the family need to manage time for the study. So, children come to the open class in their own convenient time.
Today:
Having imparted three years of educational service to little children who are either domestic workers or factory workers, Bikalpa Open Class is currently running with 46 children ages ranging from 3 to 13. We are glad to say that the participation of girl children has increased tremendously within these years, which has been a great motivation for us.
